Miami is a sunny, brash metropolis with very distinctive charm. Mostly known for the long Florida coastline, South and Miami Beaches, the strip’s restored art deco, pastel architecture and palm trees reflect appropriately on the sand and surf.
The outlying areas include Coral Gables, Coconut Grove, Little Havana and downtown. Unlike many major cities, Miami’s major draws do not come from the urban settings of skyscrapers and main streets.
These areas tend to be quite segregated by economics and ethnicity. Key Biscayne is a small, plush neighborhood, mostly reserved for the affluent. Little Havana is largely Cuban and not half as tourist-friendly. Coconut Grove and Coral Gables both offer nice resorts and lavish gardens.
Indulgence seems to be the theme here, perfect Florida weather, shopping, dining and drinking, and so on are some of the favorite pastimes. Some museums, galleries and other cultural notables are scattered around South Beach as well.

Bringing the Kempinski brand's refined elegance and luxury to the Russian capital, the Baltschug Kempinski occupies a beautiful late 19th century building directly across the river from the Kremlin. The fantastic views of Moscow's most buildings are matched by the hotel's plush interiors and impeccable facilities including top-class fitness club and impressive conferencing facilities. Rooms and suites are soberly but sumptuously furnished and fitted, and the hotel staff have been trained to provide the very highest levels of service.
The finest of the four Marriott hotels in Moscow, the Royal Aurora has modeled itself on Moscow's most famous luxury hotels, with a charming purpose-built building in full Art Nouveau style. Inside, the hotel offers sumptuous rooms and suites, a full range of luxurious 5-star facilities, and a superb range of concierge services. The hotel was also the first in Moscow to offer butler services. Located on historic Ulitsa Petrovka, one of Moscow's smartest streets, the Royal Aurora Hotel is just a short walk from Red Square and the Kremlin.
Moscow's most beautiful hotel, this glorious Art Nouveau palace has long been a byword for luxury and wealth in the city. Standing just a few steps from Red Square and opposite the Bolshoi Theatre, the Metropol Hotel was opened in 1903, served as the home of the top Bolshevik officials after the Revolution, and reopened in 1991 as Moscow's first international luxury hotel. Sumptuous rooms and suites, many furnished with antiques, are matched by superb restaurants, opulent conferencing facilities, and a full range of 5-star services.
The Metropol's main pre-Revolutionary rival, the National Hotel is equally well situated directly opposite the Kremlin. It also boasts spectacular Art Nouveau facade and public spaces. Recently taken over by the Royal Le Meridien group, it has accommodation and facilities to match its rich history and impressive exterior. Fully renovated in 1995, the National Hotel has beautifully fitted guest rooms and suites, many furnished with antiques, plus a renowned restaurant, superb facilities for corporate events, and a pampering fitness center and spa.
The latest addition to Moscow's 5-star hotels has gone all out to set the standard for luxury and opulence in the city. Occupying a purpose built, palatial building just a few steps from the Kremlin, the Ritz Carlton Hotel has huge, opulently appointed rooms and suites, all furnished and fitted with the finest natural materials and latest technical amenities. The Ritz Carlton also offers the most carefully thought out and exhaustive range of concierge services in Moscow, plus all the luxury business and leisure facilities you would expect from this world-renowned brand.
Fully renovated in 2005, the historic Savoy Hotel, which first opened its doors in 1913, has recently become the only Russian member of the prestigious Small Luxury Hotels of the World association. With only 67 guest rooms, all furnished and decorated with traditional elegance and contemporary comfort, the Savoy offers truly exclusive accommodation in the very heart of Moscow, just a short walk from the Bolshoi Theatre and Red Square. Fitness, business and dining facilities are unconstrained by the hotel's size, and are all superb.
Unlike the majority of Moscow's luxury hotels, the Swissotel Krasnye Kholmy eschews traditional elegance for a thoroughly modern approach to luxury. Housed in a sleek, 34-story tower with a riverside location in the southern center of Moscow, the Swissotel, which opened in 2006, has already become a Moscow landmark. State-of-the-art room designs are matched by the superbly conceived conference and meeting spaces, and a full range of luxury business and leisure facilities. Views from higher floors are some of the best in Moscow.

With Brian (Nathan's Friend who had come to join us for a week) in tow we visited Lake Atitlan for a couple of days and stayed at the beautiful Hotel Atitlan just outside of Panajachel. After sipping on wonderful margaritas for a day, we took a boat tour around the lake, first visiting the most important indigenous town of Santiago Atitlan. The highlight was probably the indigenous culture and also Maximon, a fun Mayan god who drinks lots of Alcohol and smokes like crazy.
